The solitary music of Johnny Powell was born in a small pink cottage on Dartmoor, and has since spawned into focussed project of songs, poems, thoughts, prayers, video, art, things, parts, and other mind and matter.
Numerous gigs and collaborations have since followed, including performances with Jeffrey Lewis, Simone Felice, Erland and the Carnival, Meg Baird, Drugstore, Cherry Ghost and Alasdair Roberts amongst others. An EP was released along the way on the Rural Colours label, and the debut album has just been released.
Although labelled a solo project, in reality this project has continued to bear fruit due to the appreciated input of some good folk who come, play, gig, record and go as they so please. Their instruments and objects played too long to list, they include Chris Derrick, Paul Mill, Laura Powell, Oliver Charles, Ian Hinton-Smith and Sam Leeming (thus far).
You will also hear plenty of Chris, Sam and Oli on the 'poems' and 'music' pages of this site playing pianos, guitars and electronic bits and bats.
"Johnny Powell's new solo venture is a harrowing, ethereal creature that swims in delicate voices, folky reflection, minimalist electronica and incidental found sounds – like an even lonelier Devendra Banhart. Interesting and affecting" (24/7 Magazine)
